The days are flying by as we enter into the final 4 weeks of classes.  It hardly seems possible that, in such a short time, those seniors whom we have grown to love will be setting out on their own on the path toward their college and career goals.

We have been so busy we have barely had time to catch a breath!  The seniors went on their senior trip to Santa Clara, CA and Six Flags Great America and had a great time together.   Also that week, 14 students traveled to Portland to hear the former Korean president Kim, Dae-jung (recipient of the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize) speak at the University of Portland about his “Journey of Faith”.  We are so blessed to live close enough to Portland that we are able to take advantage of this kind of event and give our students exposure to the great men and women of our age.  Last year students were about to participate in a forum where they had the opportunity to listen to Rudy Giuliani, Colin Powell, Robert Schuller, Zig Ziglar and others.

Two Sundays ago, on April 20th, we had the 1st annual CCA IRON CHEF competition.  10 teams went head-to-head in a 2 hour cook-off.  Each team was given a 2 burner camp stove, utensils, access to a grill and $100.  They had to plan their menu, go to the store, purchase their ingredients and cook a 3-course meal uing the secret ingredient – BANANAS – all in 2 hours!  It was a fun and exciting afternoon.  Each team did a fantastic job of preparing their meal, but in the end, Team Carrot composed of Young Sun Kwon, Pun Wachirasrisirikul, Ye Seul Lee, Eun Hye Lee and Sun Ah Kim pulled out a win just edging out the staff (Team Tomato) by 8 points.  Hopefully, this event will work it’s way into CCA tradition.

Several of our sports’ teams this year earned a listing in the Oregonian/Dairy Farmer’s Academic Allstate Awards.  Our cheerleaders, boys’ basketball , girls’ tennis and girls’ track teams all placed in the top ten in the state for their team GPA average.  We are so proud of our scholar athletes.

This past week on Thursday night, we also enjoyed a Russian dinner complete with Piroshkys and Borscht.  All of the students ate until they were stuffed and even carried “To Go” plates back to their dorms to enjoy later.

Tonight is the annual Junior/Senior banquet.  Our juniors and seniors will be all dressed up for their evening of dinner & activities.  Tomorrow, the CCA student music group will present their first concert in the CCA chapel.  They have been practicing and preparing all year and are looking forward to it.

Next week, all of our spring sports’ teams will travel to their district tournaments and meets – Track to Oakridge, Girls’ Tennis to Sisters, and Boys’ Tennis to Medford.

We’re looking forward to the alumni reunions over Memorial Day weekend.  Dr. Dan Johnson, former president of the University of Toledo, will be our Baccalaureate speaker this year.  The Baccalaureate service  will be Sunday, May 25th at 11:00 AM, Mayfest will be on Friday evening May 30th at 7:00 PM, and the Graduation Ceremony will be on Saturday, May 31st at 10:00 AM.

Our gorgeous spring weather has left us – but hopefully only for a short while.  We enjoyed a few warm days last week with students taking every opportunity to be outside and soak up some of the sun.  By Friday, however, the rain had returned and we had another tennis match cancelled.  The girls are still waiting to get in our first match and the boys have only had the opportunity to play 1 ½ matches.  Track, however, goes on in spite of the weather.  The team has done quite well so far this season, improving on their team score each week.

This past week the Student Council enjoyed a luncheon with the school administration.  It was a fun time for relaxing together and enjoying good Mexican food.  The students had a chance to give input to us with their suggestions and ideas for the upcoming year.

Sunday worship service brought us a wonderful time of praising the Lord.  I am so proud of our student participation.   22 students (and staff as well!) from 7 different nations come together to help lead us in praise and worship this week.  It was wonderful to hear the bongos played by Joshua Sandrali and the violin solo by Hillary Ahn.  Of course we always enjoy our drummer San Kim and his brother bassist Kang Kim.  Sunday night, the students thoroughly enjoyed dinner provided by the Ami Sushi restaurant of Roseburg, OR.  They brought a variety of sushi as well as Korean BBQ.  As you can see by the pictures, the students had a great time!  Next week, on April 14th, we will be enjoying Chinese food brought to us by Lee’s Wok, of Myrtle Creek, OR.   I know the students will enjoy that as well.

Tuesday and Wednesday mornings will be taken up with our annual National Achievement Testing which ranks each student comparing them with students in the same grade across the United States.  This Saturday night will be the annual CCA Talent Show.  I took a peak at the line-up and it looks like we will have a good variety of talent.  It is an event that I always enjoy very much.  We have a few tennis matches coming up this week also, if the rain stops and 2 track meets also.

Our Advanced Art class will leave on April 9th to head up to Seattle for the ASCI Art Competition.  After seeing some of the amazing work that our students produce, I am confident that they will do quite well.  Mr. Shaffer’s Seminar class is leaving on Friday on their annual visit to the Getty Museum in L.A.  This year, they were able to obtain tickets for Phantom of the Opera and will take in a show as well.

From now until the end of the year, it seems like every week is full to overflowing with activities, but don’t worry, students still find the time to study.   This week on Friday we will honor those students who have a GPA of 3.25 or above for the 3rd quarter at the Academic Awards assembly.  Our Principal’s List honors students with a GPA of 3.75 or above, the Honor Society honors students with a GPA of 3.50 to 3.74,  and the Honor Roll honors those students with a GPA of 3.25 to 3.49.   We will also name those students who have qualified to be CPR certified for the 3rd quarter.  C.P.R. stands for Christian Character, Personal Responsibility and Respect and students earn privileges by not only keeping good grades, but by also keeping their rooms clean and showing good character and respect to others.  There will be a special reward day at the end of the year for those students who have earned CPR qualification for 5 of the 7 periods during the school year.

Thanks so much for taking the time to find out what has been happening here at CCA.  I will do my best to post pictures and videos as they become available.  Be sure to check out the photos from Sushi night!

    Blessings!

    Keeping in Touch

It is hard to believe that this school year is already three quarters finished with only nine weeks left of classes, but that’s where we are!  Third quarter grades will be posted this week on PowesSchool.

Things generally begin to hop around this time of year as students are trying to make the most of the few remaining weeks.  There are big activities and events every week it seems.  Coming up right away after break, we have the much loved “California Achievement Tests” (April 8 & 9) and after those, we will enjoy our annual Spring Talent Show where students and staff can showcase their hidden (or not so hidden), talents for all to see and enjoy.  I look forward to it because it seems that each year I am surprised by someone’s talent that I never would have imagined.

Mr. Shaffer’s seminar class will also be making their yearly trek to Los Angeles to tour museums and absorb culture this month.  Plans are also in the works for the 1st CCA Iron Chef Challenge.  The staff team will be challenging student teams in the preparation of a 3 course meal using a secret ingredient.

The Galley, CCA’s very own café run by the students in the Advanced Culinary Arts class, will be showcasing it’s culinary delights in April as well.  They will offer various delicacies on Friday evenings throughout the month.

Our Seniors are busy preparing for their senior trip to Santa Clara, CA to Great America the last weekend in April. With almost all of the seniors participating, it should be a memorable time for all involved.

The purpose of this blog is to keep you abreast of the happenings here at CCA.  I will try and get a weekly update posted for you every Sunday.  Be sure and check out the Sports Blog as well for reports from our Tennis & Track Teams.

    Blessings to all of you!
